SEA KAYAKING

October 23, 1998

Today I took my first sea kayaking trip. Last weekend when we were in Florida Martina Ellis bought a new sea kayak. She already had one but she wanted a different model.

Now with Martina having two sea kayaks, my mind started working and I said: “Martina maybe we could go on a trip and I could paddle your other kayak to see if I like sea kayaking.” She said: “Oh yes Iíd love to do that.” So we planned it for today.

This morning I drove to Amite to help her load the two kayaks (theyíre heavy). We got to Manchac at 11:30 and went right to Middendorfîs for lunch.

After lunch we went to the boat launch on North Pass and prepared to paddle. We headed West for Lake Maurepas. There was a rather strong East wind and it was right at our backs.

Just as we were entering the lake I saw a flock of coots sitting on the water. I paddled right for them and they let me get to within fifty feet before they flew.

About a half mile out we spotted a large bird in a tree. We paddled closer to see what kind. It was a bald eagle and I was really surprised that it didnít fly as close as we were.

We continued West for another forty five minutes. We were on open water and the waves had picked up considerably. A few white caps even. We turned around to go back and we were heading right into the wind now. It was more fun. The long kayak really took the waves well. My little solo canoe would have been bobbing around like a cork.

The eagle was still sitting on its perch in the tree when we passed going back.

When we got back to the launch we had paddled for two hours and I wasnít a bit tired. I could have gone on longer but I didnít want to push too much since this was my first time doing this particular activity.

I definitely want to do more sea kayaking.
