BOGUE CHITTO AUGUST 18, 1996
Sunday August 18, 1996
Today we did a little canoe trip on the Bogue Chitto River from Holmesville to the Walker Memorial Water Park.
We met at the highway 98 bridge and decided which stretch of the river we would paddle.
There was Cathy, Ruby and me. All of us in solo canoes. We went to Holmesville, dropped all the canoes and gear and then Ruby and I did a shuttle to the Walker Water Park, left her car there and headed back to Holmesville. Put on the river at 11:00.
There were a few other canoeists and some tubers in the beginning but we soon passed them and had the river to ourselves. This is a beautiful stretch of river with forests on both sides and no camps or other signs of habitation.
The river is pretty narrow and there are a lot of fallen trees which create obstacles and almost rapids and it was a lot of fun. It was a beautiful sun shiny day and before long we had to get wet in order to keep cool.
About an hour and a half after lunch we passed the highway 98 bridge. The next two miles the river was cluttered with tubers who were put in at the bridge to take out at the Bogue Chitto Water Park.
The stretch of river between the Water Park and the 48 bridge was dullesville. Wide and deep and no current. One spot has clay shoals that created a few ripples. About three places had logs in the water that made the current a little faster.
We got to the takeout at Walker Memorial Water Park at 5 PM. Ruby took me up to Holmesville where my truck was and we got back just in time to load canoes in the rain.
We got to Ray’s in Folsum about 7:30 and I had a delicious catfish poorboy followed by a black walnut ice cream cone.
I slept well.
